Get ready for a seaside adventure! Whether you want to fish, sail, take a cruise or dig deep into history, Chesapeake Bay is the place to do it! This area of the state is also soaked in history and American heritage. The Bay is the largest estuary in North America. Keep your eyes to the sky for Bald Eagles, especially in the Caledon Natural Area. Take a canoe or kayak trip to see other marine wildlife in the serene quiet of the sea.
Colonial Beach is one of the few remaining small seaport towns along the Potomac River. Head south and you reach Westmoreland State Park, where you can overlook the Potomac from its many vistas. A little farther down the road and you reach the George Washington Birthplace National Monument. It is now run as a colonial farm where costumed employees recreate sights, sounds and smells of 18-century plantation life.
Next-door is Stratford Hall Plantation, the birthplace of Robert E. Lee. This location is also a re-enactment site with costuming, nature trails, a gristmill and a log cabin restaurant.
