Mother’s Day will be here shortly, and for most individuals, mothers and maternal figures are held with unparalleled high regard as irreplaceable role models for their daughters. For a couple of InnVirginia members, these family dynamics transfer over into the world of hospitality, where mothers and daughters work alongside each other as innkeepers in a balance of responsibilities and familial enjoyment. Uphill House: Whether they’re serving you a freshly prepared breakfast or tending to the greenery along their Gordonsville, Virginia property, Suzanne Solomon and Samantha Darling are a dynamic mother/daughter duo. According to Sam, “My mom and I have always been close and things like cooking, decorating, and being crafty were always things we enjoyed doing together, so the B&B naturally fit into our relationship. Before the B&B, we were living in different states and now she’s right down the stairs - I do not think we’ve tried so many new recipes in our life! She has always been so supportive and it has been fun getting to work with her as a business partner as well (it’s nice to have back up when my husband decides he needs to put a tractor into his maintenance budget!)." Holladay House: For Sharon Elswick, her mother-in-law Kathy is an invaluable part of the daily operations of Holladay House in Orange, Virginia. Sharon says, “When my husband and I bought our inn, we were incredibly lucky his mom and dad were 110% committed to helping us succeed.  They jumped right in, filling the gaps in our knowledge base and being our cheerleading section.  My mom-in-law helps me with anything ‘house,’ gently lending her smarts, support and laughter.  This inn -- and my psyche -- would not be the same without her. This place shines with her touch.” These mother/daughter duos are ready to welcome you to their B&Bs. What better gift is there for Mother’s Day than a relaxing Virginia getaway? (Plus, if you can’t schedule a vacation right on Mother’s Day, you can always offer the gift of an InnVirginia gift card!) Happy Mother’s Day!
