Springtime means warmth, greenery, flowers, outdoor excursions, and fun getaways. For those seeking an activity that includes all of these aspects, Virginia’s Historic Garden Week is a fantastic idea: “Each spring visitors are welcomed to over 250 of Virginia's most beautiful gardens, homes and historic landmarks during ‘America's Largest Open House.’” Top off your tour with lodging at a Virginia inn, and you’ve got yourself the epitome of a spring getaway. House and garden tours take place April 18-25, 2015 and include everything from waterside tours of Virginia’s Eastern Shore to historic plantations in Goochland County:
  1. James River Plantations: “Open together for the first time in over a decade, three historic properties located along scenic Route 5 celebrate Historic Garden Week on three consecutive days.” These three Charles City properties include Westover Plantation, Shirley Plantation, and Berkeley Plantation. (InnVirginia Lodging: Scents of Cedar B&B, Museum District B&B)
  2. Eastern Shore: “The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a peninsula nestled between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Its history is as old as Captain John Smith and as new as rockets heading for the moon. It is home to the oldest continuous court records in the United States, the freshest seafood and where ponies run wild.” Experience the history and modernity of the Eastern Shore at one or all of the four participating cities-- Cape Charles, Exmore, Onley, and Chincoteague. (Nearby B&B lodging: Fig Street Inn, 1848 Island Manor House, Miss Molly’s Inn)
  3. Winchester: “Winchester, founded in 1744, is the oldest Virginia City west of the Blue Ridge Mountains… This tour in the historic district features three private homes and gardens of distinctive architectural styles, Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters, and the gracious historic home and 6-acre idyllic garden of Winchester’s founder.” (Nearby B&B lodging: Old Waterstreet Inn, Pembroke Springs Retreat, L'Auberge Provencale Bed and Breakfast Inn)
