“Historic preservation clearly does much more than preserve bricks and mortar. It recognizes that our built history connects us in tangible ways with our past and provides context for the places we occupy and the world we live in.” –Craig Potts
Virginia is history. No, not in the sense that it’s over and done with, but rather that it is the embodiment of the past. From the settlement at Jamestown to Colonial Williamsburg to Monticello and the various Civil War battlefields, Virginia is a portrait of those who came before us. Further embodying our rich past are InnVirginia’s historic B&Bs. Now, historic doesn’t always mean Colonial or Victorian. There are types of historic inns that are very different from each other, and we’ve found that there is a unique, historic home for everyone:
Back Inn Time is a 1908 Southern Manor located in Kilmarnock and boasting charming décor, a homey feel, and beds that “feel like sleeping on a soft cloud,” as one TripAdvisor reviewer said. But don’t think that the inn’s historic status means that you have to sacrifice any amenities; they have all the modern conveniences that you could want or need.
1848 Island Manor House is situated on the picturesque island of Chincoteague, standing a window into the past while offering seaside lodging to the modern day traveler. As innkeepers Lin and Sam Mezza say, “The story…begins in the 19th Century at a time when two young gentlemen, a doctor and a postmaster, pooled their resources to build a grand manor house on a beautiful barrier island along Virginia’s Eastern Shore.”
Caledonia Farm-1812 in Flint Hill is a “beautifully restored federal-style farmhouse” and stands as both a Virginia Historic Landmark and a member of the National Register of Historic Places. Visit Caledonia, and you’ll have the chance to admire historic pieces like the flint-lock rifle belonging to the first owner, who used it during the Revolutionary War. And speaking of the Revolutionary War, it was the Hessian soldiers who crafted the B&Bs window wells and mantels. If you have any interest in this period of history, then you won’t want to miss a stay at Caledonia Farm.
