Indulge in the Historic Homes of Inn Virginia

Much of the charm of an Inn Virginia bed and breakfast lies in its history and the stories of the innkeepers. These historic homes include inns like Caledonia Farm 1812, the Inn at the Crossroads, and North River, each possessing its own rich past and unique origin.
Caledonia Farm in Flint Hill, VA is celebrating its 200th year of history, having been constructed in 1812. The name “Caledonia” is a Latin moniker “given by Romans to the land in today's Scotland” (Wikipedia). It is possibly a reference to the Caledonii, a Scottish tribe, or to Sìdh Chailleann, the "fairy hill of the Caledonians." Obviously, Caledonia Farm is rooted in history, from its name to the Scottish immigrants who settled the area.

Originally called “Crossroads Tavern,” The Inn at the Crossroads in North Garden, VA is an establishment that dates back to 1818. As a National Historic Place and Virginia Historic Landmark, Crossroads gifts its guests with a feel of the 1820s, when travelers would bide their time at taverns for lodging. Crossroads is further linked to the past by means of the writings of C.G. Sutherland, who owned the tavern in the 1850s. Sutherland’s books are filled with fascinating records, such as using whiskey and cider as payment to rent the property.

North River Inn in Gloucester, VA is comprised on three English-style country houses each of which is reminiscent of the 18th and 19th century. North River’s Creek House is modeled after the “British colonial homes in the West Indies,” while Toddsbury Cottage displays the decorations and furnishings of 18th Century romance. The Toddsbury Guest House, too, is a portrait of history in its private elegance. (Besides the historic buildings themselves, North River is also located close to the “Historic Triangle,” which includes Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg.)
